Keizersgracht 208-A, 1016 DX Amsterdam
We are offering this unique apartment (approx. 206m²) in a former merchant’s house on the Keizersgracht! This nationally listed building with original details covers the front room with a gorgeous view out over the Keizersgracht, the rear house with several floors and the garden.
Location/accessibility:
Located on one of the four main canals in Amsterdam is a glorious apartment with garden, and with all the amenities within easy reach. In the immediate vicinity you will find the famous Nine Streets and the Haarlemmerstraat with its wide range of supermarkets, boutiques, characterful shops and welcoming open-air cafés and restaurants. Hotspots such as the Koningsplein, the Leidsestraat, the Dam as well as Central Station are all in the vicinity and within walking distance. There is no lack of art and culture and the Koninklijk Theater Carré, the Hermitage, the Stopera, as well as various other international museums and art galleries are just some of the advantages of living in the centre of Amsterdam. There is plenty of public transport with trains, trans, metros, ferries and buses leaving Central Station and going in all directions (as well as direct trains to Schiphol). You may park your car in the various car parks in the neighbourhood or on the canal. The other urban districts can be reached in a few minutes by bicycle.
Layout:
You enter the marble-clad communal entrance with its 18th century plasterwork through the classic doors. To the left is the access to the front space. The rear house may also be accessed through the hallway by a separate front door which gives onto the hall and staircase.
Basement:
The straight staircase on the raised ground floor takes you to the basement. From here you enter the kitchen which also offers access to the rear garden. The kitchen is equipped with a 6-ring gas stove with two ovens, fridges, dishwasher and sink. Classic Delft blue tiles behind the stove give this space a great deal of atmosphere. There is a pantry in the middle of the basement, which has a sink as well as the connections required for a washing machine and tumble dryer. There is access to the storage area from the pantry, as well as to the hallway situated on the street side of the property. This space would be ideal for parking your bicycles, for example. This is where you will also find the old safe room, which is being used as a storage space.
Raised ground floor:
There are two doors that offer access to the raised ground floor of the apartment from the general hallway. There are two large windows at the front of the apartment which provide the home office/ living room with a lot of light as well as a gorgeous view out over the canal. This space is currently being used as a home office and has several bookcases and a tasteful open fireplace. There is a roofed interior patio in the middle of this floor with plenty of light coming from above.
From here you will find the staircase to the first floor. There is a separate toilet with small sink and charming tiling in the hallway. There is also a corridor to the garden room / dining room / guest room which has access to the deep garden. Adjoining this room is a bathroom that is fitted with a vanity unit, toilet, walk-in shower and towel radiator.
First floor:
Using the stairs on the raised ground floor, which are fitted with a runner and an arm rest on every floor complete with original snail shell decoration, you reach the first floor with cupboard space on the left hand side. There is a wonderful sitting room on this floor as well as a separate pantry. The original details, which include the ornamental plaster ceiling, make this sitting room especially charming. Large windows provide the space with lots of light, not to mention the fine view out over the rear garden.
Second floor:
Two flights of stairs will take you to the second floor. There is a landing halfway up with beautiful stained glass windows. There is a separate toilet with small sink in this floor and the the master bedroom with its en-suite bathroom. This has been fitted with a double vanity unit, walk-in shower, bath and towel radiator. There is a further staircase on the second floor, again with a landing with Stained glass windows which look onto the part of the property which used to be part of this residence, the front house. Opposite this staircase is a door behind which is the straight staircase to the third floor.
Third floor:
This floor covers approx. 26m² and is ideal for the creation of a bedroom. There is also access from this space to the attic which provides further storage space.
In brief, a very spacious original apartment with an unusual number of opportunities in a beautiful location on the Keizersgracht! The original building dates from 1618, built by a glazier. It was bought in 1630 by Dr Nicolaas Tulp, the neighbour from 210 who is famous from the Rembrandt painting of the Anatomy Lesson. He had it rebuilt in 1651 for his daughter and son-in-law Aernout Tholincx, of whom Rembrandt also painted a portrait. At the time, a text was applied to the wall “Soeckt het eeuwich leeven” (Seek eternal life).
