Vondelstraat:
Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679), poet. He wrote 24 tragedies and also poetry about heroes and heroic acts. The part of the street that was part of the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel until 1896 was initially called the Verlengde Vondelstraat (the extended Vondelstraat). Under the leadership of C.P. van Eeghen, a number of Amsterdam residents put together a plan for the creation of a riding and walking park in 1864, which was then implemented on the basis of a design by L.D. Zocher. The first part of the park opened in 1865. When a statue of Vondel was added in 1867, the park was named the Vondelpark.
